Vladimir Voronin was reelected president of the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova for the next four years, even if he earlier announced that he could give up the presidency, IPN reports.
At the beginning of the ninth Congress of PCRM held in Chisinau on October 7, Vladimir Voronin said the event was timed to coincide with the 104th anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution.
According to the leader of PCRM, 435 delegates were chosen to take part in the congress. But only 297 were present at the beginning of the event held at the Place of the Republic. A number of 138 delegates were absent primarily for health reasons. The 297 delegates represented 2/3 of all the delegates and the congress could, therefore, continue.
The Communist leader also said that a number of the participants in the ninth congress of PCRM laid flowers at the monument to Vladimir Ilyich Lenin at the “Moldexpo” Exhibitions Center in the capital city.
The Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova was registered officially as a party of the left on April 27, 1994. Vladimir Voronin has headed the party since its founding. Currently, PCRM is in the opposition, alongside the Party of Socialists with which it formed an electoral bloc for the snap parliamentary elections of July 11, 2021. The parliamentary group of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists has 32 members.
