The buildings of 46 educational institutions will be thermally insulated. The lighting and heating systems of the schools will be modernized and this will help reduce bills. The project, with a total budget of US$54.4 million, was launched on Thursday, IPN reports.
According to the authorities, heat pumps, solar thermal collectors, photovoltaic panels and individual heat points will be installed in schools. Also, all doors and windows will be changed.
The Sustainable Transition through Energy Efficiency in Moldova Project (STEEM) has a budget of US$54.4 million. US$50 million is provided by the IBRD as a loan, and US$4.5 million is offered by the Multi-Donor Trust Fund managed by the World Bank Group.
“Education is the pillar of society, and this project will bring benefits immediately after it is implemented,” Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu said in the launch, noting that the institutions that were already thermally rehabilitated managed to substantially reduce their energy bills.
For his part, Minister of Education Dan Perciun stressed that the investments that are currently being made in the education system are unprecedented. “The investments in school infrastructure are a priority, and the STEEM project will significantly contribute to creating an optimal learning environment,” said the official.
The project will be carried out in three stages. The first stage (2025-2026) will include 10 institutions, the second stage (2026-2027) – 12, and the third stage (2027-2029) – 24 schools.
