EU is ready to support Moldova in the event of an energy crisis, Janis Mazeiks

The Government in Chisinau has made progress in the energy sector in recent years and, if Russian gas does not reach the Transnistrian region from January 1, the responsibility will lie with the Russian company Gazprom, said the head of the EU Delegation to the Republic of Moldova Janis Mazeiks. According to the diplomat, Gazprom is obliged, according to the contract, to deliver natural gas up to the border of the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.

“We are ready to work with the Government to support the country in the context of this crisis,” Mazeiks stated in the program “At 360 Degrees” on Radio Moldova.

The diplomat said that the EU in the past three years has supported the Republic of Moldova in the energy sector with €240 million. “We have discussions with the Government both in Chisinau and in Brussels about the needs of the Republic of Moldova. I hope that this crisis will be avoided,” added the head of the EU Delegation to the Republic of Moldova.

For now, the European Union cannot announce the amount of financial support. “We have heard about the necessary amount of €400 million (estimated by Chisinau, editor’s note), but we are not yet ready to announce when this support will be possible. But we will continue the discussions,” said the diplomat.

The leader of the Transnistrian administration Vadim Krasnoselsky on Monday decreed a state of economic emergency in the Transnistrian region for a period of 30 days. The decree provides for the rationalization of natural gas and energy consumption, the prohibition of exports of energy resources and the creation of a state reserve of energy resources. Earlier, Prime Minister Dorin Recean announced that he will ask the Parliament to establish a state of emergency in the energy sector starting with December 16.
