President Maia Sandu’s request to the partners to provide air defense systems to Moldova, which she formulated in her speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, is appropriate, said the chairman of the Party of Change Ștefan Gligor. According to the politician, the Republic of Moldova needs to strengthen its defense capabilities, to protect its territorial integrity. For his part, the chairman of the Coalition for Unity and Welfare Igor Munteanu said the Forum in Davos is an economic platform where military messages are inopportune, IPN reports.
In the World Economic Forum in Davos, President Maia Sandu requested the foreign partners to provide Moldova with air defense systems. The request was made after fragments of a new rocket were found near Larga village of Briceni district on January 14. The chairman of the Party of Change said Russia should be discouraged from violating Moldova’s airspace.
“The Republic of Moldova is fully exposed as regards the protection of is airspace. You are taken seriously and the aggressor will not launch missiles on you when this knows that you will shot these down. If we want to protect our territorial integrity, we must have such operational opportunities. President Maia Sandu’s message is correct. This does not yet mean that we will start to fight against someone. This means we want our airspace to be respected and rockets that kill people not to fly above our territory,” Ștefan Gligor stated in the program “Shadow Cabinet” on JurnalTV channel.
For his part, the chairman of the Coalition for Unity and Welfare said it is essential to strengthen the National Army’s capacities given Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, but the requests to provide air defense systems should be made on military, not economic platforms.
“I don’t know if the Davos format was the most suitable one for transmitting military messages. Surely, we need assistance. The best format is Rammstein, where there is an alliance of over 50 states that provide lethal weapons for the Ukrainians to be able to defend the country. And not only weapons but also classified information, technical assistance, anti-ballistic missile systems. Our problem is that we continue oscillating between saying things quietly and clearly formulating the real needs of the army. It’s true that the Republic of Moldova cannot be an opponent at regional level, but it should be a state that is able to defend its borders,” said Igor Munteanu.
In the World Economic Forum held in Davos, President Maia Sandu also asked the foreign partners to offer financial support at least equal to the amount provided in 2022, which totaled €600 million, so as to help the citizens to cope with inflation.
