The new agricultural season started with a rise in the number of vegetation fires as many people, including farmers, choose to set the dry grass on fire when cleaning the fields. President Maia Sandu called on the people to be precautious when they start fires in the fields, IPN reports.
“Last week alone, 612 hectares of land burned and employees of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations dealt with 217 cases to extinguish vegetation fires,” wrote Maia Sandu, referring to the Inspectorate’s data showing that the 300 dry vegetation fires that happened so far this year affected over 830 ha of land.
President Sandu noted that field cleaning by burning is a harmful practice that brings discomfort and endangers the health and life of people who live close to the fields where fires are started. It also affects the environment as the organic substance in soil is burned, micro-flora is destroyed, field insects, birds and animals are killed and a very long period of time is needed for restoration. Moreover, when it is windy, the woods, communication lines, gas networks and even houses can also catch fire.
The official reminded that the private individuals who resort to such a barbarous practice as from last year are punished with a fine of up to 15,000 lei, while the legal entities – with up to 40,000 lei.
“It is our responsibility to take care of nature and the dear ones,” urged President Sandu.
