Number of Diabetics is increasing. Recommendations from NPHA specialists

The rate of diabetes accounts for approximately 48% of all endocrine, nutrition, and metabolic diseases in the Republic of Moldova. In recent years, there has been a 1.5-fold increase in new cases: from 28 cases per 10,000 people in 2020 to 40.6 cases per 10,000 in 2023. The mortality rate in 2023 was 15.2 cases per 100,000 people. These data are provided by the National Public Health Agency (NPHA) in the context of World Diabetes Day, observed annually on november 14, IPN reports.

Public health experts note that diabetes is a growing global health issue projected to affect 1.3 billion people by 2050, with an even higher prevalence expected in low – and middle-income countries. Currently, one in 10 adults worldwide has diabetes, and three out of four people with diabetes live in low – and middle – income countries.

Diabetes is a non – communicable disease that occurs when the pancreas can no longer produce insulin or when the body cannot use the insulin it produces. Although it is a progressive disease, people with diabetes can lead active lives if they manage their condition.

If not controlled, diabetes is a leading cause of early disability, including heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, liver damage, sexual dysfunction, blindness, and foot amputations.

According to NPHA, diabetes affects physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being. On average, diabetes reduces life expectancy by ten years.

For a healthy life and to prevent complications from diabetes, experts recommend a healthy, balanced diet low in sugar, salt, and fats. They also recommend maintaining a healthy weight and engaging in physical activity. “Quit smoking and reduce alcohol consumption. Studies show that smoking increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 30-40% compared to non-smokers. Avoid stress and maintain a work-rest balance. Keep blood pressure and cholesterol levels under control”, advises NPHA.
