Siegfried Mureșan: Negotiation process will accelerate Moldova’s integration into EU

The negotiation process, in itself, is a very good thing because it will accelerate Moldova’s integration into the European Union. The people will feel the concrete benefits of integration throughout the negotiation process, not only at the time of accession itself, said MEP Siegfried Muresan, who welcomed the agreement of the European Union ambassadors on the framework of accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. The negotiations are to start on June 25, IPN reports.

“The fact that, in only two years since the granting of the candidate status, we have an agreement on the negotiation framework shows the importance of Moldova and Ukraine for the entire European Union. We, the European Parliament, have insisted that this framework be adopted by the end of June so that the first intergovernmental conference takes place before autumn and we can start the actual work on the negotiation chapters,” stated Siegfried Mureșan.

As the chairman of the European Parliament’s Delegation for relations with the Republic of Moldova, the official assured the authorities and the people of the Republic of Moldova of all the Parliament’s support in the accession process. “I was recently in Chisinau. I met with President Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Dorin Recean, Deputy Prime Ministers Cristina Gerasimov and Mihai Popșoi and I can say very clearly: the people there are very well prepared for negotiations,” said the MEP.

The ambassadors of the EU member states agreed, in principle, on the negotiating frameworks for the official opening of accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. Thus, on June 25, the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union will convene the first intergovernmental conferences with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.

The Republic of Moldova submitted an application for EU membership in March 2022 and was granted the candidate status in June 2022. In April 2023, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling on the European Commission and the European Council to open EU accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova once the nine steps identified by the European Commission are fulfilled.
