Term “Transnistria” banned on left bank of the Nistru

The use of the term “Transnistria” as the name of the region was prohibited on the left bank of the Nistru. The so-called Supreme Soviet in Tiraspol adopted a relevant bill put forward by the de facto leader Vadim Krasnoselsky. It stipulates fines and arrest, IPN reports.

Through that draft law, the term “Transnistria” on the left bank of the Nistru is equated with the notions of “fascism” and “Nazism”. Thus, amendments were made to provisions that refer to “combating of extremism”.

“Personally, I consider the term “Transnistria” was transformed from the idea of ‘territory beyond the Nistru’ into a term meaning hunger, devastation, murder, blood, killing of people, the Holocaust,” said Krasnoselsky.

The changes are due to come into force in about two weeks. After that, administrative penalties will be applied for using the term “Transnistria” in a public speech, a publicly displayed work or in the media. Such actions will amount to manifestations of Nazism.

If the so-called provisions are not obeyed, individuals will face a fine of up to about 360 Transnistrian rubles or even at most 15 days of arrest. For officials, the fine is twice higher, while for legal entities the fine exceeds 9,000 Transnistrian rubles.

Administrative liability will not arise if the term “Transnistria” is used to express a negative attitude towards the ideology of Nazism and extremism.
