Invalidation of election in Gagauzia would have generated uncontrollable conflict, opinions

The ruling party made a mistake when it decided not to compete in the Bashkan election in Gagauzia, said the leader of the Coalition for Unity and Wellbeing (CUB) Igor Munteanu. According to the politician, the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) should have provided a candidate for the gubernatorial election, who would have at least transmitted pro-European messages. For his part, political pundit Anatol Țăranu said that if Yevgenia Guțul is excluded from the Cabinet, this will be a new mistake, but, as a compromise solution, the law can be amended so that the presence of the governor at the Cabinet meetings is reduced, IPN reports.

The CUB leader noted that the invalidation of the election in Gagauzia would have led to a conflict in the region. The PAS should assume the failure of the election in Gagauzia after it refused to field a pro-European candidate for this election.

“The invalidation of this election following the decision taken by the People’s Assembly of the region would have generated an uncontrollable conflict. We should not underestimate the effects of a conflict with this region. All the elections in the Autonomous Territorial Unit are against Chisinau. The elections are won by those who are more vocal and aggressive. The situation when the ruling party says that it does not have a candidate and will not become involved is abnormal. A party with 63 seats of MP is obliged to be in the midst of events at least in order to monitor the situation and to provide a model of political conduct in these elections. That’s why they should assume responsibility for what is going on in the region. This evasion from a conflict situation does not generate respect,” Igor Munteanu stated in the program “Secrets of the Power” on JurnalTV channel.

Historian Octavian Țîcu said the presence of a pro-European candidate would have shown how many citizens in Gagauzia want the European integration after the West invested fabulous sums in the development of the ATU.

“We didn’t have any representative of the pro-European parties, who would have clearly shown what had happened during 30 years while €300 million had been pumped into this region. I think a method could have been found for the pro-European parties to enter this region, to transmit messages at least,” said historian Octavian Țîcu.

Political pundit Anatol Țăranu said an eventual decision to exclude the Bashkan from the Cabinet would be a mistake.

“They rumor that the Bashkan can be excluded from the Cabinet. This will be a violation of the law. I would recommend those from the government to amend the law so that the Bashkan remains a member of the Cabinet, but attends the Cabinet meetings only when issues related to the autonomous region are discussed. In other cases, this should not be present. The current law does not specify the formula concerning the Bashkan’s participation in the Cabinet meetings. This should remain a Cabinet member, but with a reduced role. We should ultimately ensure security. The Cabinet discusses secret issues that refer to national security,” stated Anatol Țăranu.

After the gubernatorial election in Gagauzia was validated, Prime Minister Dorin Recean said the Cabinet will cooperate only with the local elected officials who promote the interests of the inhabitants of the autonomous region. On May 22, the Comrat Appeals Court validated the Bashkan election held in Gagauzia, confirming Yevgenia Guțul as the winner.
