The district electoral councils registered about 60,000 candidates as contenders in the November 5 local general elections. Over 3,900 candidates will contend for the 898 posts of mayor and more than 56,000 persons will compete for the 11,058 posts of local councilor, IPN reports, with reference to the Central Election Commission.
Some 92% of the candidates for mayor in the administrative-territorial units of the first level represent political parties and electoral blocs. 31% are women, while 69% are men. 8% are independent candidates: 28% women and 72% men.
Twenty-seven candidates will compete for the post of mayor general of the municipality of Chisinau, while 15 candidates will contend for the mayoralty of Balti.
