The state of emergency in the energy sector remains in effect, as current risks do not allow for an immediate abandonment of this mechanism. The National Crisis Management Center states that a potential cessation of the emergency state can only be considered when the energy security of the Republic of Moldova will be fully guaranteed, reports IPN.
The subject was addressed during the CNMC meeting, attended by representatives from 12 institutions, who assessed the state of the energy sector. They concluded that, although there have been recent progress, the sector remains vulnerable, especially due to the total dependence on fuel imports and the unstable regional context.
Authorities have explained that, from a technical point of view, the energy system is not yet fully stabilized. In the period of April-May, the domestic production of electricity significantly decreases due to the reduction of the cogeneration plants’ activity, which increases the dependence on imports and the risk of higher energy costs.
At the same time, CNMC emphasizes that, even if the state of emergency will be lifted, it will be necessary to establish a state of alert in the energy sector. This will allow the maintenance of the necessary intervention tools to prevent the export of fuel stocks and to avoid the emergence of gasoline and diesel deficits on the domestic market.
A state of emergency in the energy sector went into effect on March 25 for 60 days, following attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure that led to the shutdown of the Vulcanesti-Isaccea power line.
