During two months since the launch of the campaign to voluntarily hand over illegally held weapons, 316 weapons owned by civilians as well as 75 arms and 1,275 rounds of ammunition of different calibers held illegally were handed over to the police. Another 57 illegally owned guns were detected and seized by the police, IPN reports.
The General Police Inspectorate said that during the two months, the police checked over 43,000 gun owners and drew up reports against 1,495 people for violating the rules of keeping, carrying, using and possessing lethal and non-lethal weapons.
The voluntary surrender of weapons, ammunition and explosive substances exempts the person from the penalty for illegal possession: up to seven years in prison and a fine of a maximum of 65,000 lei.
The citizens can obtain information about the handover method at the nearest police station or inspectorate, or by calling the emergency service 112.
Over the past ten years, around 20,000 firearms have been removed from illegal circulation and destroyed by meltdown.
The campaign will end on May 31.
