Drivers can possess only one driving license. If they move to another county, the license can be exchanged and, as a result, the Moldovan license is withdrawn and struck off the register, IPN reports.
The Public Services Agency (PSA) said that, in accordance with the provisions of the Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on driving licenses, no person may hold more than one driving license simultaneously.
The citizens of the Republic of Moldova have the opportunity to exchange their driving licenses in the countries where they settle. In some states, the license is exchanged on the basis of tests. A new driving license is issued without taking the tests in the states with which the Republic of Moldova concluded bilateral agreements on the recognition and conversion of driving licenses.
Once exchanged, the Moldovan driving licenses are withdrawn and sent to the issuing authority – the Public Services Agency – to be struck off the register. “However, there are citizens who, after exchanging their license in another country, by drawing up a declaration on their own responsibility, notify the issuing authority of the Republic of Moldova that they lost the Moldovan driving license and ask to be issued with a new document, thus violating the provisions of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Moldova and committing the crime of false declarations,” the PSA noted.
Currently, 55 such cases are being examined. The citizens who simultaneously hold two driving licenses issued by two countries, in addition to the administrative procedure for canceling the driving license, risk criminal penalties. It goes to a fine of up to 47,500 lei or up to one year in jail, with ban on holding particular positions or carrying out a particular activity for a period of up to five years.
