Marculesti Airport to merge with Chisinau Airport, to become cargo hub in 1-2 years

The Marculesti Airport will be merged with the Chisinau International Airport and will be transformed into a cargo airport in the next 1-2 years, IPN reports.

“The Marculesti Airport is a prospect for cheapening tickets, when it will be managed by the state airport. Parliament is to vote on this draft law. Later, we will transfer it to the cargo segment. These are revenues that we miss today,” Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea said in the “Rezume” program on RliveTV.

According to the official, the draft law on the merger of the two airports has already received all the necessary approvals.

“There will be fusion by absorption. It will be voted on in Parliament and the merger will take place. Subsequently, all the goods from Marculesti will be registered with the Chisinau Airport at the PSA and then the works to reconstruct the Marculesti runway will begin. This whole process will take 1-2 years,” explained the minister.

Bolea stressed that the Chisinau Airport can no longer be expanded to cover the cargo segment.

“It has the capacity it has. But, having an entire cargo airport, from the 5,000 tonnes of cargo that were transported last year (parcels, mail), we can expand it to a much larger quantity so that it becomes a regional hub for cargo,” he said.

At the same time, the minister noted that, after making some investments in Marculesti, the airport could also operate seasonal charter flights.
