The Central Election Commission, together with several observers, will closely monitor the vote recount process in the new local elections in Bolduresti, Nisporeni district. This was announced by CEC President Angelica Caraman, who said that, based on the electoral body’s experience, the results rarely change after recounts, IPN reports.
“We received a request to recount the votes. The conditions for a recount were met. We will be present in the territory during the recount, and observers will also be present. We have ordered a recount of all ballots, both invalid and valid. The Constituency Electoral Council will tally the votes, and on July 8, the results of the recount will be presented to the CEC,” said the head of the CEC during a broadcast on TVR Moldova.
She mentioned that this process will be closely monitored, but emphasized that, according to the institution’s experience, the results do not change significantly after the votes are recounted. “From our experience, in extremely few cases is the result different”, Angela Caraman pointed out.
When asked about the candidacy of Nicanor Ciochina, who has been accused of being involved in a traffic accident resulting in the death of a minor, Caraman explained that registering candidates is not the responsibility of the CEC.
“When it comes to local elections, constituency electoral councils are the entities that register candidates. Candidates are not registered by the CEC. If we look at the Electoral Code, the legal provisions are being complied with. The Code states that only persons who have been convicted by a final judgment or those who have unexpunged penalties for intentional crimes are restricted from running for office. There are no restrictions on persons who have not been convicted by a final court decision”, said the head of the CEC.
In the local elections held in Bolduresti, Nicanor Ciochina was re-elected mayor by a margin of 13 votes. However, the result was contested by his opponent, Sergiu Bulicanu, which led to a recount of the votes.
