Moldova achieves record results in the renewable energy sector, expert

The Republic of Moldova records record results in the renewable energy sector, and data from the first quarter of 2026 show that changes are no longer just a temporary trend. According to the IDIS expert, Veaceslav Ionita, Moldova produced 253 million kWh of renewable energy in the first three months of the year, 35% more than in the same period last year, reports IPN.

The main driver of this growth remains photovoltaic energy, followed by wind energy, while hydroenergy and biomass have smaller contributions. Currently, the Republic of Moldova produces annually approximately 1.2 billion kWh of renewable energy, almost double compared to the level recorded a year ago and almost 15 times more compared to 2020.

The impact of this evolution is significant on domestic consumption, indicates Veaceslav Ionita. Locally produced renewable energy already covers almost 30% of the country’s annual electricity needs. Moreover, in March 2026, the Republic of Moldova recorded for the first time periods in which the production of renewable energy exceeded domestic consumption, and the surplus began to be exported due to limited storage capacities.

The new challenge for the sector is no longer energy production, but its intelligent management. Authorities and experts emphasize the development of storage solutions, network expansion, the creation of energy exchanges, and the development of a modern and competitive market. For a country that in the past almost entirely depended on imports, the fact that it has become, at certain intervals, an energy exporter represents a major change.
