How can young people be attracted to teaching. Initiatives launched by the Ministry of Education

The crisis of teachers in rural areas is a major issue that the education system in Moldova is facing, recognized by the Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Education and Research, Ludmila Pavlov, in an interview with the IPN news agency. She stated that a series of reforms have been initiated in order to overcome the shortage of teachers.

In order to maintain and attract young people in the education system, in 2024, the salaries of teaching staff were increased by 15%. “We are aware that a 15% increase is not sufficient, but depending on the available resources, we will continue these annual increases to attract young specialists, especially in schools in rural areas,” assures the MEC representative.

The unique allowance offered to young teachers has been increased from 120,000 to 200,000 lei. In addition, various facilities are provided, including rent payment and coverage for expenses such as utilities, specifically for electricity and heating.

The Deputy Secretary General at the Ministry of Education states that initiatives have been launched to attract students to pedagogical faculties. Scholarships for students in pedagogical specializations have been doubled.

“I have initiated a large campaign to promote studies in Moldova, as more and more young people choose to study abroad”, emphasizes Ludmila Pavlov. According to her, university infrastructure and conditions for students will be improved, specifically sports halls and dormitories will be renovated.
