Doina German: Referendum result automatically becomes law

There will be no vote in Parliament to amend the Constitution following the referendum on Moldova’s accession to the European Union. According to Deputy Speaker of Parliament Doina German, the citizens’ opinion expressed during the plebiscite will automatically become law. The PAS deputy chairwoman also said that the party has started a campaign to inform the citizens about the advantages of the European integration and the activities are financed with funds of the Party of Action and Solidarity, IPN reports.

The Deputy Speaker noted that if the result of the referendum on the country’s accession to the European Union is positive, the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova will be automatically revised and the objective of the European integration will be enshrined in the Supreme Law. After the referendum, there will be no vote in Parliament to amend the Constitution and the will of the people will automatically become law.

“There will be no need for a vote in Parliament. Automatically, the citizens’ vote becomes law. The national constitutional referendum is about the people’s vote and this is above any bill passed by Parliament. Therefore, the referendum result automatically becomes law,” Doina German stated in the talk show “Resume” on RliveTV.

According to the MP, the Party of Action and Solidarity has launched a campaign to inform the citizens about the advantages of joining the EU and all costs associated with the printing of information materials in this regard will be reported to the CEC.

“It is a campaign that will be reported to the CEC, on behalf of the Party of Action and Solidarity. We have always supported the European integration. Respectively, this is also part of the party’s objective. It was the first weekend during which the Party of Action and Solidarity mobilized across the country. We were present in squares, in rural localities and larger cities. It is an information campaign and we will conduct it by the end of April,” said the Deputy Speaker.

PAS MPs submitted to the Constitutional Court the notification regarding the initiation of the national referendum to amend the Constitution. The plebiscite is expected to be held on October 20 and the question at the referendum will be: “Are you for the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union?”.
