The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, begins his official two-day visit to Chisinau today, occasioned by the Republic of Moldova taking over the six-month presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, reports IPN.
During the visit, Alain Berset is set to meet with President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu. The discussions will address the priorities that Chisinau sets for its term at the helm of the Committee of Ministers, as well as ways to strengthen cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the Council of Europe.
The European official’s agenda includes several major topics for the region. One of these is the firm support for Ukraine and holding the Russian Federation accountable for the crime of aggression. Also, the need for a New Democratic Pact for Europe, intended to strengthen democratic security, will be addressed. In addition, the challenges posed by misinformation and foreign informational interference in democratic processes will be discussed.
During his visit, the Secretary-General will also participate in the meeting of the Standing Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which brings together about 60 parliamentarians from the 46 member states. Moreover, he will take part in the meetings of the PACE Bureau and the ad-hoc Committee of PACE.
This is Alain Berset’s second visit to Chisinau. The official was last in the Republic of Moldova in February 2025.
