The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the General Inspectorate for Migration launched a series of events today to celebrate International Migrants Day, observed annually on December 18. Employees of the two institutions kicked off the campaign with a symbolic run in Valea Morilor Park in Chisinau, IPN reports.
This year’s initiatives, under the global theme “Every Step,” highlight the importance of fostering an inclusive society where both Moldovans and migrants contribute to the country’s sustainable development.
“By creating opportunities for migrants and enhancing the protection of their rights, migrants can become a powerful force for good and support Moldova’s development,” reads the message released by the IOM.
International Migrants Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on December 4, 2000, in response to the growing number of migrants worldwide. In the Republic of Moldova, the observance holds special significance, reflecting over two decades of collaboration between the IOM and national authorities.
“Every Step symbolizes progress in building a society that recognizes and harnesses the potential of every individual, regardless of their origin”, emphasized the event organizers.
The campaign includes a symbolic run in Balti on Friday, another in Cahul on Saturday, and an art exhibition created in partnership with the Academy of Music, Theatre, and Fine Arts.
Over the years, the IOM has supported migrants in vulnerable situations and contributed to developing policies aimed at promoting integration and social cohesion. The organization’s activities have been made possible through the support of international donors and close cooperation with Moldovan authorities.
