Dorin Cimil about eventual resignation of CEC members

The president of the Central Election Commission Dorin Cimil admits that discussions are now held concerning the resignation of the current composition of the Commission. He noted no one urged him to resign, but he cannot say the same about the other CEC members. The mandate of the current composition of the CEC expires at the end of this month, but, in accordance with the law, it can be extended for at most 90 days, IPN reports.

Following reports about pressure exerted by political factors on some of the CEC members to make them resign and to this way impede the appropriate holding of elections, the CEC president voiced hope that the current Commission will complete its duties.

“I wasn’t contacted to be told to resign, but discussions on the issue were held. Currently, the resignation of the whole composition or of some of the members of the CEC is not considered, What the CEC members will do in the future depends on their principles and responsibility,” Dorin Cimil stated in the talk show “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

The CEC president noted that pressure is exerted on the institution by society, over the Commission’s decision concerning the number of polling stations intended for the diaspora, and also by the Government, which does not ensure certainty as to the financing of elections.

“There is pressure on the part of the voters and this is right. The people express their dissatisfaction, the civic sprit. This pressure was also felt during the meeting of the CEC. The political players exert pressure on their area of activity. They do not adopt laws, do not come to consultations with us, do not allocate money and do not offer guarantees that the funds needed for the proper conduct of elections will be allocated,” stated Dorin Cimil.

At 3pm, the Central Election Commission is to reexamine its June 5 decision to establish 139 polling stations outside the country for the July 11 snap parliamentary elections, which is the same number as at the last year’s presidential elections, even if a record number of Moldovans from the diaspora – over 100,000 – preregistered for the upcoming elections.
