The duration of mandatory military service, which is currently one year, could be reduced. The statement was made by the Minister of Defense, Anatolie Nosatii, in Parliament, during the debate of the simple motion, submitted by the opposition, reports IPN.
The deputy of the Alternativa faction, Ion Chicu, asked what concrete measures were taken following the cases of death and maltreatment in the army, this being the subject underlying the motion. “What have you done and undertaken practically after you received the report from the people’s lawyer and after each case of death? What are you doing to prevent such cases?”, asked the deputy.
In response, the Minister of Defense stated that the institution he leads is working on improving conditions for the military and strengthening psychological support, but also suggested the possibility of changing the duration of military service.
“We are working on prevention, we are working on improving conditions, on creating psychological and moral conditions that would prevent these deviations and problems. That’s why we proposed to review the methods of service execution. Maybe a year is too much for a soldier. Analyzing when these cases occur, they usually happen at 8 months”, declared Anatolie Nosatii.
According to the minister, the authorities are analyzing several options to prevent such situations and to improve the conditions in the National Army.
