Full digitization of university activities through educational lab at UTM

An innovative educational laboratory, which will bear the name of the famous mathematician Grigore Moisil, the father of Romanian computer science, was inaugurated on Tuesday at the Technical University of Moldova (UTM). The center, equipped according to European standards, offers an advanced platform for practical learning in the field of computer science and mathematical modeling, intended to contribute to preparing students for the challenges of a competitive technological market, IPN reports.

Among the facilities of this laboratory are an interactive touch screen, a high-quality conference system, video equipment and an LCD video wall display, all contributing to the full digitization of the University’s activities.

UTM rector Viorel Bostan, underlined the importance of this center for the technical education of Moldovan students, as well as the meaning of the name of the center, inspired by Grigore Moisil’s contributions in mathematical logic and computer science. The rector thanked the Romanian Government for the support provided through the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova.

“It is an honor and a joy to be present today at the inauguration of the Educational and Innovative Center “Informatics and Mathematical Modeling” Grigore Moisil, a particularly important project for the Technical University of Moldova and for the future of technical education in our country,” said Viorel Bostan.

The space also includes an exhibition dedicated to mathematician Grigore Moisil, which contains works and books from the collections of Romanian professor Gheorghe Păun, a member of the Romanian Academy, and professor Alexe Leahu from UTM, meant to inspire students to follow the examples of those who paved the way in science and computer science.

Secretary of State of the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova Adrian Dupu highlighted Romania’s commitment to the education of young people in the Republic of Moldova, noting he is proud that the Romanian Government, through the Department, was able to support this project, which represents more than a sum of money as it is a commitment to the future of the young people in the Republic of Moldova, a promise that Romania stands by on the road to excellence and performance.

Important events for the academic community have already been organized within the center: the programming marathon “Artificial Intelligence – CEIM Grigore Moisil Project”, the “Data Science” workshops within the ECCO conference, educational visits to schools during which students had the opportunity to participate in interactive computer science sessions, carrying out projects and discovering the importance of exact sciences.

Project coordinator Daniela Istrati thanked the partners for their support and stressed that this project was a challenge and, at the same time, a significant achievement for the Technical University’s team, opening up new opportunities for modern education.

“Without the support of the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova and the Government of Romania, a laboratory of such quality and complexity would not have been possible. Thanks to rector Viorel Bostan for his view and for his openness to innovation and performance,” stated Daniela Istrati.

Grigore Moisil, whose name the new UTM center bears, was a world-renowned mathematician, who contributed to the formation of the first generations of computer scientists in Romania, being the one who ordered the introduction of computer science in high schools and faculties. Moisil was a remarkable teacher, who taught mathematics with humor, being nicknamed the author of jokes about science. Asked at one point if it is good for a teacher to make jokes at lecturers, Grigore Moisil reportedly replied that “Science is not sad, if only for some”.
