The period of the restraining order will be extended from 10 to 20 days, while that of the protection measures will be prolonged to 6 months, compared to the current three months. This is stipulated in a draft law registered with Parliament, IPN reports.
“The protection orders is an essential legal instrument, which aims to immediately and effectively protect victims of domestic violence. Failure to comply with it compromises the safety and well-being of the victims, allowing the aggressors to continue the abusive behavior,” said the authors of the draft law, a group of PAS MPs.
The bill presents data from the Police, which show that in 2024, 1,104 protection orders were issued, mainly for female victims and child victims.
The sponsors of the bill note that in many cases, women no longer initiate the extension of the protection order due to the lack of money for transport and other expenses related to travel to the courts. The extension of the length of the emergency restraining order and the protection order, in their opinion, will increase the degree of protection for a longer period, during which the victim will benefit from services and will be able to make assumed decisions.
The draft law also provides for mandatory electronic monitoring for aggressors subject to protection measures. Extended protection for victims is also to be ensured by obliging the law enforcement agencies to inform them about the release of aggressors, and through improved access to legal aid.
The bill was approved by the Cabinet and is to be examined and adopted by Parliament.
