A future peace agreement for Ukraine must be based on clear security guarantees, respect international law, and include reparations. These elements were established in a resolution adopted on Tuesday by the European Parliament, four years after the large-scale Russian invasion, reports IPN.

In accordance with European legislation, any such agreement must not limit Ukraine’s right to self-defense or the choice of alliances. MEPs emphasize that a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia must be based on credible security guarantees, similar to Article 5 of the NATO Charter.

At the same time, the Members of the European Parliament call for the strengthening of sanctions against Russia and the continuation of the decoupling from Russian energy, emphasizing that no decision regarding Ukraine and Europe should be taken without their agreement.

At the same time, the resolution reaffirms the granting of a 90 billion euro loan from the European Union to Ukraine for the years 2026 and 2027. The loan, previously approved by MEPs, stipulates that 60 billion from the aid package should be allocated to strengthening defense, while the remaining 30 billion should be intended for budgetary support.
