Professors and students protest in Bucharest against government austerity measures

SocietyTop News

Hundreds of employees from the Romanian education system are protesting on Wednesday in Victoriei Square in Bucharest, dissatisfied with the austerity measures adopted by the Government. They argue that the new decisions will affect the salaries and working conditions in schools and universities and union leaders warn that, without dialogue with the executive, the protests could continue, reports IPN.

The demonstration is organized by three trade union associations from the education sector, aiming to draw the authorities’ attention to the impact of measures to reduce the budget deficit. The unionists accuse the authorities that these decisions affect the salaries, working conditions and the dignity of the teaching staff.

Students also joined the protest, dissatisfied with the reduction of the scholarship fund by half this school year, the maintenance of social scholarships at 925 lei per month and the possible decrease in the number of budgeted places, reports Digi24.

Parallel to the demonstration, the unions have collected signatures for a citizen legislative initiative promoted by four trade union organizations, with the aim of repealing a law of the Bolojan Government on certain fiscal-budgetary measures. The initiative was published on Wednesday in the Official Gazette of Romania.
