Today in Brussels, the second European Union-Moldova Summit is taking place. The accession process to the EU, ongoing reforms, and cooperation in areas such as energy security are set to be discussed. Moldova is represented by President Maia Sandu, and the European Union by the President of the European Council, António Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, reports IPN.
During the meeting, the leaders will review the progress of the Republic of Moldova in the reform process, especially in the areas of rule of law, fundamental rights and combating organized crime. According to European officials, Chisinau has made substantial progress and has demonstrated commitment to aligning with the acquis communautaire, despite external pressures.
Also on the discussion agenda is the strengthening of energy security, diversification of energy sources, and increasing energy efficiency. The leaders will also address cooperation in the context of regional security risks and the effects of the war in Ukraine.
In this context, the President of the European Council, António Costa, stated that the summit is taking place at a historic moment for the European Union and the Republic of Moldova, following the opening of the first accession negotiation cluster. According to him, enlargement is a geopolitical and strategic choice for a stronger and safer Europe, reiterating the EU’s firm commitment to the European path of the Republic of Moldova and noting that the bilateral partnership is closer than ever.
At the end of the summit, the adoption of a joint declaration is expected, through which the commitment to deepen EU-Moldova relations and support the country’s European path will be reaffirmed.
