The drivers suspected of being under the influence of drugs could be tested on the street by using special portable devices similar to the mechanism for determining alcohol-related inebriation. The drug testing mechanism for identifying cases of drug-impaired driving was approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday, IPN reports.
According to Minister of Home Affairs Adrian Efros, the mechanism wills enable to swifter identify cases of drugged driving. The procedure will last for several minutes and will enable to detect and immediately punish persons who pose a threat to the other traffic participants and to the whole society because they drive under the influence of drugs.
“It is known that the accidents and other violations of the Road Traffic Regulations are often the result of driving not only under the influence of alcohol, but also of narcotic substances. The procedure and the rules for establishing alcohol-related inebriation at the scene are defined by law, while drugged driving hasn’t been regulated,” stated Adrian Efros.
The approved bill says the General Police Inspectorate now has ten Drager DrugTest 5000 systems.
