Protests of great magnitude have erupted in the city of Los Angeles in the United States after immigration agents have detained dozens of individuals in various areas of the city. These measures have sparked dissatisfaction among the local community. Tensions escalated quickly, and on Sunday, the leader of the White House, Donald Trump, ordered the deployment of two thousand National Guard members in Los Angeles, as protests have spread to the central area, including near the federal building and in the neighborhoods of Little Tokyo and Chinatown, places with a dense population of migrants, as reported by IPN.
California Governor Gavin Newsom mentioned in a social media post that he intends to sue Donald Trump following his decision to activate the National Guard in the state.
In response, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt accused Gavin Newsom of being “weak” in the face of violent protests in Los Angeles, mentioning that he did not intervene while federal officials were being attacked. Leavitt also stated that “officials were assaulted by violent radicals and illegal criminals,” while Newsom “did nothing to protect the city”.
According to the international media, the tense situation in the city has affected not only the protesters, but also the journalists present on the scene. On Sunday, during a live broadcast, Lauren Tomasi, US correspondent for the Australian television station 9News, was hit by a rubber bullet fired by the police forces.
Journalist Lauren Tomasi was in the city center and was reporting live on the protests when she was injured. She explained that the city’s law enforcement forces were intervening, firing rubber bullets to disperse the crowd and direct protesters away from the central area.
Several protesters were carrying flags of Mexico or signs mocking federal immigration authorities, who arrested 118 unauthorized immigrants in Los Angeles on Friday, according to CNN.
