The National Unity Party (PUN) and the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) decided to merge into one party and started to draft the political program. The decision was taken in the extraordinary congress of the PUN, being welcomed by the PLDM, IPN reports.
In the congress, the PUN elected the new chairman of the patty. This is Alexandru Cimbriciuc, former PLDM MP who later withdrew from the party.
“The decision to merge the PUN with the PLDM was taken due to the necessity of uniting the Romanian and European people in the Republic of Moldova,” runs a statement signed by the two parties.
The National Unity Party was founded based on the Right Party that was created on February 14, 2015. In the congress of June 2017, the party was renamed the National Unity Party. This was led by Octavian Țîcu, who resigned in December 2021 after PUN founders Ana Guțu and Anatol Șalaru reportedly demanded this in the absence of Țîcu.
After the congress of May 28, 2023, Ana Guțu said that she gave the only categorical vote against the merger of the PUN and PLDM. In this connection, she resigned as the first deputy chairwoman of the National Unity Party.
