President Maia Sandu states that Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu did not condition his resignation on the approval of a reform plan or government restructuring. According to the head of state, there were no such conditions in the discussions with him. Maia Sandu clarified that the only objection raised by Munteanu concerned his “interpersonal relationship” with the Minister of Education and Research, Dan Perciun. In turn, the minister confirmed that he had tense discussions with the prime minister on fiscal-budgetary policy, reports IPN.

“There was no condition presented by the Prime Minister regarding restructuring, regarding the fight against corruption or other matters. There was only one objection expressed in the discussions with me, which relates to his interpersonal relationship with one of the government members (…), the Minister of Education and Research, Dan Perciun,” said Maia Sandu in a press conference.

The President refused to provide details about the nature of the disagreements between the two, stating that she is not the person who should comment on aspects related to the relationships between the members of the Government.

In a reaction, Minister Dan Perciun confirmed that he had a tense discussion with Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu during a meeting that took place on Tuesday. According to him, the disagreements were about the way the fiscal-budgetary policy was elaborated and coordinated. He mentioned that several provisions of the document surprised the members of the Government, including those from his team, because they were not presented to them beforehand.

“I have always believed that when there is an opinion, it must be expressed. I have done this in relation to other prime ministers as well. One of the distinctive things we have in PAS are open discussions and debates on subjects, even if sometimes this means challenging the opinion of one person or another. I believe in the necessity of these discussions,” mentioned the Minister of Education.

Alexandru Munteanu has announced his resignation from the position of Prime Minister, stating that he can no longer exercise his mandate in accordance with his principles and beliefs. As a result, President Maia Sandu has announced that on Monday she will begin consultations with parliamentary factions to designate a candidate for the position of Prime Minister.
