The Republic of Moldova will run for the presidency of the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan in New York, during the 81st session. The Prime Minister emphasized that small states must contribute to shaping the international system, and not just depend on it, reports IPN.
In his speech, Vasile Tofan said that the Republic of Moldova is building its own future and highlighted the progress in reducing external dependencies and strengthening resilience. The Prime Minister mentioned the diversification of gas procurement sources, the increase in the share of renewable energy, and the integration of the power system with that of Romania and the European network.
The executive chief reaffirmed that European integration represents the national project of the Republic of Moldova and emphasized that joining the EU is a free choice of the citizens. At the same time, he said that the country can contribute to the European Union through its experience in strengthening democratic resilience, through economic development, and through its contribution to the security of Europe’s eastern border.
The Prime Minister also referred to Russia’s war against Ukraine and its consequences for the Republic of Moldova. Vasile Tofan mentioned the violation of the country’s airspace by Russian drones, the support given to Ukraine, and reiterated Chisinau’s position on the withdrawal of Russian troops from the Transnistrian region and the peaceful reintegration of the country, respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Vasile Tofan also spoke about the need to strengthen institutions and protect democratic processes from external interference. In conclusion, the Prime Minister appealed to citizens for solidarity during the difficult winter period and stated that, although Moldova will not become a great power, it can become a great country.
