The cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, and the closeness of both countries to the European Union, are in the common interest of the two states, asserts the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Oleksandr Mischenko. The statement was made during the Moldova Security Forum. The official emphasized that the neutrality status of the Republic of Moldova does not constitute an obstacle to cooperation with Ukraine, reports IPN.

“When we talk about unity, the approach of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union is also in our interest. It is important for us to strengthen the democracy and freedom of the European Union”, said Oleksandr Mishchenko. He mentioned that good cooperation allows the two countries to discuss and act coordinated on topics related to the implementation of the European Union’s requirements.

On the other hand, the official stated that Russia has already begun to attack Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, five weeks earlier than in previous years, in an attempt to cause maximum damage before the onset of cold weather. According to him, Moscow will intensify its attacks on critical infrastructure, using a combination of missiles and an increasing number of attack drones, to undermine the country’s resilience and force society to accept peace conditions dictated by the Kremlin.

He acknowledged that Russia is adapting and using new tactics and weaponry to achieve its objectives. The warning comes in a context where a harsh winter could trigger a new wave of refugees, which will put additional pressure on neighboring countries, including the Republic of Moldova.

Oleksandr Mișenko described Ukraine as a “fortress” defending the security of the entire European community, and added that supporting his country is not just an act of solidarity, but an investment in the long-term stability of the continent. He called on external partners to remain united and determined to demonstrate to Moscow that aggression will not be accepted as a new norm in international relations and that the only path to follow is the restoration of order based on international law.
