The Ciocana Court on November 3 decided that suspended Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo will remain under house arrest for 30 more days, as the poroseution requested. The lawyers for Stoianoglo disagree with the court decision and intend to appeal it, IPN reports.
“Such a decision is regrettable. They continue to disparage me. It’s a pity that our Government didn’t draw any conclusion even after representatives of the European Parliament and of the Venice Commission visited the Republic of Moldova,” Alexandr Stoianoglo told the press.
Prosecutor in charge of the case Victor Furtună said the request to extend the preventive measure was made amid a number of risks, namely the risk of hampering the proper conduct of the investigation, the risk of hiding, the risk of causing public disorder if the person is released and others.
Alexandr Stoianoglo was detained on October 5 and was remanded in custody. In several days, the Ciocana court ordered to place him under house arrest for a 30-day period.
The suspended Prosecutor General faces charges of abuse of office, bribery, perjury and facilitation of an organized criminal group. Alexandr Stoianoglo pleads not guilty.
