The Republic of Moldova will receive €15.4 million worth of grants as co-financing for the 400 kV Balti-Suceava overhead power line within the second phase of the project to interconnect the electricity networks of Moldova and Romania. The Cabinet ratified the grant agreement between the Republic of Moldova, the state-owned enterprise Moldelectrica and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), IPN reports.
Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu said that the support provided by the EBRD represents 20% co-financing for the 400 kV Balti-Suceava overhead power line. The money will be used to interconnect the energy system of the Republic of Moldova and that of Romania, to expand the 400 kV Balti power station and rehabilitate electric transmission networks on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, as well as for consultancy.
The total value of the project is €77 million. The line has a length of 58 kilometers on the territory of the Republic of Moldova and ,in order to speed up the construction process, the works are to be declared of public utility with national interest.
“The power line will contribute to increasing energy security and integrating additional renewable energy capacities and to the expansion of the electricity market at the level of the European Union,” the minister said.
The grant agreement between the Republic of Moldova, Moldelectrica and the EBRD for the implementation of the project “Interconnection of electricity networks between the Republic of Moldova and Romania, Phase II” was signed in Chisinau on February 6, 2025.
