The political party Coalition for Unity and Welfare (CUB) does not support Octavian Țîcu as a candidate for the office of President, who was put forward by the political bloc “Together”, of which the CUB is a member. Members of the CUB said that they do not accept as a candidate a person whose statements create political controversies, IPN reports.
“We do not agree and do not accept the idea of designating a candidate who would be obedient to the current power, to the monopolistic government of the Republic of Moldova. I’m referring to the Party of Actions and Solidarity,” CUB leader Igor Munteanu told a press conference.
The CUB withdraws its support for the current candidate of the bloc and reserves the right to support the candidate agreed by the members and sympathizers of the Coalition. The topic is to be discussed at the party’s National Political Council, which will meet at the end of this week.
Igor Munteanu argued that the art of compromise is a very important tool for the political class and for society, but only to the point of cowardice, renunciation of the fundamental principles on which the political commitment is built. In 2024, the CUB accepted to associate itself with a bloc in formation, of which it had expectations and to which it wanted to contribute.
The politician said that in the past three months the bloc has been practically absent. “The most serious current problems related to “Together” bloc are related to a certain kind of blackmail, which we, the CUB, cannot accept. First of all, it is a blackmail regarding the merger of parties. We cannot give up our liberal identity, the commitments we have in relation to the European political parties to which we belong. And, obviously, this has led to the imposition of merger decisions. It does not characterize us and does not interest us. Secondly, we have noticed a vicious practice in which important decisions are prompted or are influenced by actors from outside the bloc,” said Igor Munteanu.
On August 4, the political bloc “Together”, made up of the DA Platform, the League of Cities and Communes, the Party of Change and the Coalition for Unity and Welfare, fielded historian Octavian Țîcu for the October 20 presidential election. The announcement was made at a press conference.
