The judges have come together for the General Assembly. A number of 340 judges of the about 400 system judges will be making a new attempt to elect the members of the Superior Council of Magistracy (SCM) from among judges, IPN reports.
At the beginning of the meeting, Minister of Justice Veronica Mihailov-Moraru welcomed the judges, saying that the justice sector reforms are a priority of the whole society and is also a central commitment in the European integration process. The current agenda of the Ministry of Justice contains concrete actions and sustainable measures, but the involvement of all the judges and a functional SCM are needed for these to be implemented.
“Definitely, the whole society of the Republic of Moldova now follows attentively the General Assembly of Judges in the hope that the initiated reforms will be brought to an end in the interest of the citizens and justice and in the name of law, not of group interests,” stated the minister.
The rule of law based on upright processes increases the international community’s confidence and this way assures a favorable environment for foreign investments. This will lead to higher living standards and economic stability. “I realize that the General Assembly is the forum in which you assume decisions, state positions and to raise the preoccupations exciting in the judicial system. The Ministry of Justice remains open to an efficient dialogue with judges and members of the self-managing body,” noted Veronica Mihailov-Moraru.
Judge Victoria Puică was selected as chair of the meeting, while Nelea Budăi as secretary.
The General Assembly of Judges was convened on March 17 after a four-year pause. The judges were to elect the four SCM members from among themselves, but the meeting was adjourned until April 28.
