President Maia Sandu argues that Russia is not winning the war against Ukraine and that the international community’s support for Kiev must continue. The statement was made in a speech delivered in the Lithuanian Parliament, on the occasion of the Restoration of Independence Day of this state, reports IPN.
The head of state spoke about the security challenges faced by the Republic of Moldova, including the hybrid war waged by Russia, through misinformation, energy pressures and interference in political processes.
The President reiterated that Moldova’s accession to the EU represents not only a development objective, but also regional security. In this context, Maia Sandu appealed to the support of European states to accelerate the European integration process.
The head of state noted the historical solidarity between Moldova and Lithuania, mentioning that Moldova was the first country to recognize the restored independence of Lithuania in 1990, even though it was part of the USSR.
Maia Sandu referred to the attacks on the Vilnius Parliament on January 13, 1991 and the outbreak of war by separatist forces backed by Russia on March 2, 1992, highlighting that both events reflect the same aggression and threat to the sovereignty of states.
“A culture of memory means protecting ourselves from manipulation. It means refusing to confuse the aggressor with the victim. It means recognizing and honoring those who have defended our countries, those who have kept the national consciousness alive, when expressing identity was forbidden, and those who have survived deportation, camps, and famine without losing their dignity”, Maia Sandu mentioned.
The visit of Maia Sandu to Vilnius takes place between March 10-11, in the context of marking 36 years since the restoration of Lithuania’s independence from the Soviet Union, proclaimed on March 11, 1990.
