A 22-year-old man involved in a fatal car crash near Codreanca, Straseni that killed 5 people and injured 6 others, including himself, is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, IPN learned from a Prosecution Service spokesperson.
The suspect could face from 6 to 10 years in jail along with a driving ban.
The man has been taken in custody while treated for injuries at the Straseni District Hospital. Prosecutors are requesting that he is placed under preventive arrest for at least 30 days.
As reported earlier, the man was driving without a license after it had been suspended in connection with a DUI charge in late June.
The accident occurred on August 10. Driving a Mitsubishi, the 22-year-old allegedly made an illegal overtake, crossing the continuous line and hitting an oncoming Opel head-on. A 17-year-old girl and 56-year-old woman died in the Mitsubishi, which caught fire as a result of the impact. The Opel’s driver, a 37-year-old man, and two of his passengers, 32 and 54, also died. Before the arrival of first responders, witnesses were able to extricate five children, 1, 6, 7, 9 and 13, from the two cars. All five were taken to the Mother and Child Institute and three of them are treated in intensive care.
