Every four years, on the first Tuesday of November, the Americans go to the polls to elect their President. The American electoral system, with the Electoral College and the specific distribution of electors in each state, means that some states – called “crucial swing states” – play a disproportionate role in deciding the winner. The major parties – the Democratic Party and the Republican Party – are usually the main protagonists of the U.S. elections, and the rivalry between them has become emblematic in American politics.
According to the updated preliminary results, Donald Trump accumulated over 67 million votes nationwide, respectively 247 electoral votes out of 270 needed, versus over 62 million votes, respectively 214 electoral votes, won by Kamala Harris.
