The Republic of Moldova has taken another step on its European path, with the opening of negotiations on the first cluster of “Fundamental Values” chapters. This stage confirms the country’s progress towards joining the European Union and European integration is no longer a distant goal, but a process already underway. The statement was made by President Maia Sandu, following the decision announced in Luxembourg, in the context of the second intergovernmental conference Republic of Moldova – European Union, reports IPN.

Maia Sandu mentioned that these chapters of European legislation are about the things that matter most to people. It is about ensuring fair justice, institutions that work in the interest of citizens, combating corruption, respecting fundamental rights and a state that offers equal opportunities to all. The head of state emphasized that this progress was possible due to the joint efforts made by authorities and citizens who believe in the European future of the Republic of Moldova.

The President of the Parliament, Igor Grosu, stated that Moldova has achieved results in the process of approaching the European Union and that the authorities will continue to strengthen the state, streamline institutions and build a European future for all citizens. The head of the legislature asserts that, step by step, the Republic of Moldova is getting closer to the goal of becoming a member state of the European Union.

The “Fundamental Values” cluster is the first group of negotiation chapters to be opened and the last to be closed, after the completion of all other chapters. The progress on this cluster will also determine the subsequent pace of the negotiation process.
