Transnistrian cars could be registered with neutral-design license plates until end of 2026

The unit of transport of the Transnistrian region could be registered with neutral-design license plates until December 31, 2026. A draft law providing for the extension of this period was examined by the Parliament’s commission on economy, budget and finance, IPN reports.

The bill was drafted by a group of MPs of the Party of Action and Solidarity. According to the initiative, the citizens will further be able to register motor vehicles used in the Transnistrian region with neutral-design license plates and to gain access to international traffic. This mechanism does not apply to vehicles used in commercial activity.

In 2018, the authorities allowed the people residing on the left bank of the Nistru to register their units of transport with neutral-design license plates for a period of two years. Subsequently, the deadline was extended. So far, more than 10,000 vehicles have been registered at vehicle registration units opened by the Public Services Agency in the cities of Tiraspol or Rybnitsa. Citizens’ interest increased after Ukraine banned vehicles with unrecognized license plates issued on the left bank of the Nistru River from crossing the Moldovan-Ukrainian border in 2021.
