Two deputy mayors of the city of Comrat are under criminal investigation in a case of abuse of power, one of them being detained for 72 hours. The National Anti-Corruption Center specifies that they are suspected of having colluded to gain improper material benefits from the public budget, reports IPN.
According to the CNA, one of the deputy mayors in Comrat is suspected of, taking advantage of the influence of his position, having facilitated the conclusion of several public procurement contracts in favor of a company under his control. The said company was registered in the names of intermediaries and would have been systematically favored in the tenders organized by the City Hall.
Also, the same deputy mayor is suspected of having exerted pressure on the municipal councilors to facilitate the illegal allocation of construction lands to his close associates, he being, in reality, the actual beneficiary. Subsequently, these lands would have been alienated, the ultimate goal being the illegal obtaining of funds.
The second deputy mayor, currently under house arrest, is also suspected of abuse of office. It would have influenced the decision-making process within the municipal Council to facilitate the allocation of land to interposed persons, the real beneficiaries being both deputy mayors.
According to the evidence presented, the facts indicate a reasonable suspicion of a coordinated action between the two, with the aim of influencing local elected officials for personal and material interest.
The CNA states that, following the searches conducted this morning at the residences and offices of the suspects, as well as in their service vehicles, relevant evidence for the case was collected.
