Moldova has reached its electric car target for 2030, but lacks charging stations

AnnouncementSociety

Even though the Republic of Moldova has reached the target of 11 thousand electric cars, set for the year 2030, the charging station network is still insufficient and unevenly distributed to cope with the increase in the number of electric vehicles. In this context, the state aims to accelerate the development of charging infrastructure, at least on the main roads of the country, reports IPN.

In Moldova, over 81 thousand hybrid cars, including plug-in types, are also registered. According to estimates, if the current growth rate is maintained, the number of electric cars used in the country could double by the year 2030.

The subject was discussed during the presentation of the conclusions of a feasibility study on the development of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The document was prepared by the Ministry of Energy and the National Center for Sustainable Energy, within a project implemented by UNDP Moldova with the support of the Government of Denmark.

State Secretary Carolina Novac stated that Moldova has achieved one of the targets set out in the National Plan for Energy and Climate ahead of schedule. According to her, the authorities will continue to support the electrification of transport and prepare the necessary infrastructure for the expansion of electric mobility.

The authors of the study note that the country has made considerable progress in promoting electric vehicles, but the charging infrastructure is not keeping pace with the development of this segment. The document proposes the expansion of a modern and accessible network of charging stations by 2030, in order to support national objectives in the field of energy and climate, as well as alignment with European standards.
