Ukraine plans to import gas from Greece through the Trans-Balkan pipeline. The natural gas transmission system operators (TSOs) of Bulgaria, Greece, the Republic of Moldova, Romania and Ukraine are jointly proposing a monthly routing product for firm bundled capacity for the period June-October 2025, which will facilitate the transportation of natural gas from Greece to Ukraine, IPN reports, citing the National Energy Regulatory Agency.
The bundled capacity product for the transportation of natural gas from Greece to Ukraine will be offered on the trans-Balkan route, strategically positioned through the interconnection points Sidirokastron/ Kulata, Kardam/ Negru Voda, Isaccea/ Orlovka, Causeni/ Grebeniki.
The monthly capacity product for June 2025, in the amount of 31.3 million kWh/day, will be offered on the Regional Reservation Platform (RBP) on May 29. In the event that a significant amount of the offered capacity remains unreserved, TSOs are considering holding another auction for the remainder of the month on a date to be jointly announced.
By October 2025, Ukraine is to inject around 5 billion cubic meters of natural gas into its underground storage facilities to prepare for the winter season and ensure the security of vulnerable consumers.
This joint STO solidarity action aims to meet Ukraine’s urgent needs, given the critical position the country has been put in. It will make it easier for Ukraine to procure part of the necessary quantities from various sources, including US liquefied natural gas and other reliable sources through the trans-Balkan route, allowing diversification and increased security of supply, says ANRE.
It is expected that the route product will lead to an increase in the utilization rate of the infrastructure of the transport operators located on the route. This, in turn, will lead to increased revenues for the operators which will be generated from the sale of so far unused capacity and thus to a reduction in transmission tariffs for the benefit of the users of the gas transmission systems in Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, the National Energy Regulatory Agency’s press release added.
