MP Tauber to spend 20 more days in detention

Shor Partly lawmaker Marina Tauber will spend at least 20 more days under preventive arrest after the Chisinau/Ciocana Court satisfied the prosecutor’s request to this effect.

Tauber called the ruling “unexpected”, claiming prosecutors failed to provide adequate evidence to justify her detention in a remand prison. She went on to claim the case against her was President Maia Sandu’s “personal vendetta” against Ilan Shor, and an attempt to deter protests and “silence criticism” against the government.

The lawmaker added she will appeal, telling her supporters to “stay strong”.

Iulian Balan, a lawyer for Tauber, echoed his client’s claim that the case was “politically motivated” and amounted to “political repression”.

On July 21, Tauber was stripped of parliamentary privilege before being arrested. Subsequently she has been charged with two offenses: knowingly accepting illegal financing for the Shor Party from an organized criminal group; and falsifying the party’s financial report for the first half of 2022 with the intention of withholding actual incomes and expenses.
