President Maia Sandu announced that she will begin consultations with parliamentary factions next week to designate a candidate for the position of Prime Minister. The statement comes after Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced his resignation on Friday morning, reports IPN.
The head of state specified, during a press conference, that she took note of the resignation request and thanked Alexandru Munteanu for his activity at the helm of the Government. At the same time, she dismissed the information according to which the former prime minister was not allowed to combat abuses, underlining that he had the freedom to lead the executive.
“The speculations that he wanted to fight against abuses and was not allowed are false. The Prime Minister had a free hand to lead the Government as he saw fit”, declared Maia Sandu.
The President mentioned that reforms are difficult, but significant steps have been taken in recent months. She described Alexandru Munteanu as “a good man”, but pointed out that she would have expected a greater involvement in making difficult decisions, a more active presence in dialogue with citizens and in communicating reforms.
Also, Maia Sandu emphasized that the future Government must represent a united and efficient team, capable of continuing the reforms and accelerating the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union. According to her, adjustments are also necessary in areas such as fiscal policy and wage setting, as well as the continuation of economic development measures and strengthening of state institutions.
Alexandru Munteanu, who was sworn in as prime minister on October 31, 2025, announced his resignation on Friday morning, stating that he could no longer carry out his duties in accordance with his principles and convictions. He thanked his colleagues and stated that he would continue to serve the Republic of Moldova regardless of the position he may hold in the future.
