The city halls will operate in the current administrative formula until the local elections of 2027, even if the decisions regarding voluntary amalgamation must be taken by the end of July. The clarification was made by the Secretary General of the Government, Alexei Buzu, who stated that the process of administrative-territorial reorganization will gradually take place over the next year and a half, reports IPN.

According to Alexei Buzu, once the new structure of the local public administration of level I, namely the town halls, is defined, the reform of the level II administration can also be outlined. He specified that the future entities that will replace the current districts will have more limited competencies, mainly focused on regional development, regionalization of services, and implementation of regional projects.

The official added that the number of districts will be significantly reduced, and the Government will subsequently present a concept that will establish the responsibilities, financing mechanisms, and the new administrative-territorial map of the country.

The Secretary General of the Government has urged mayors to use the remaining time to decide on voluntary amalgamation. He explained that the deadline at the end of July is necessary for the development of the new law on administrative-territorial organization. According to him, localities with less than 3 thousand inhabitants who do not opt for voluntary amalgamation will later be included in the process of normative amalgamation. He also said that municipalities that choose voluntary union will benefit from increased financial support, granted exclusively based on this option, without exceptions.

Alexei Buzu mentions that approximately 90% of the town halls in the Republic of Moldova are involved, at various stages, in the voluntary amalgamation process. He expressed his hope that by the end of July the number of localities opting for amalgamation will increase, so that cases of normative amalgamation remain exceptions.
