The Bulgarian authorities have withdrawn over six tons of counterfeit butter from the market, after laboratory analyses established that the product contained no milk fats at all. According to the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, the investigation demonstrated that the product contained over 95% vegetable fats, reports IPN.
The inspections were initiated following a complaint. The inspectors found significant differences between the composition declared on the label and the actual content of the product. The butter was withdrawn from sale in over 70 stores, reports Novinite.
The product was marketed as milk butter, but analyses identified a blend of palm oil, coconut oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, and lard. The Bulgarian authorities cannot guarantee that all points of sale where the non-compliant product has reached have been identified.
Specialists have warned that, although occasional consumption does not pose an imminent danger, a larger quantity of the product can be harmful, especially for people with cardiovascular conditions.
