President promulgates new Forestry Code

President Maia Sandu has promulgated the new Forestry Code, which is expected to provide new instruments for protecting Moldova’s forests.

“We must take care of our forests, because they mean more water in our wells and rivers, more fertile soil, cleaner air and healthier people”, declared the president.

President Sandu emphasized that, with the launch of the National Afforestation Program, the foresters pointed out an older issue – the forests previously planted on lands owned by local communities, but which could not be registered and maintained by the local authorities. The new Forestry Code, in addition to more rules and opportunities for state-administered forests, also brings more clarity to the way forests are managed by municipalities. The Code also aims to help mayors access funding from the National Environment Fund for the development of forested areas.

The new Forestry Code was adopted on March 28 with 57 out of 101 votes. With some exceptions, the Code will take effect 12 months after publishing in the Official Gazette.
